One of the local TV stations near my hometown must have picked up the licence for this one for a song, because I swear they aired it monthly when I was a kid. As a result, I think I've seen it more times than the rest of Eddie Murphy's filmography combined. Some parts still live rent-free in my head over 30 years later, like Charles Dance pronouncing all Js as Ys and Eddie freestyle rapping while spinning the prayer cylinder.

Anyway, you're not wrong that it's basically the Great Value version of Big Trouble in Little China. But since I was a kid at the time, I *did* love it.

Having watched it in theatres, yeah it hit better in the 80s when we were swimming in the problematic culture anyway and there was less to choose from for genre fare. I remember enjoying it on the big screen, and renting it with friends at least once.

It would be a good remake candidate, but it needs to be a horror-comedy and that’s a hard tightrope to walk.
